Greetings from the President,
As you will see, we have been spoilt with photos from recent activities for this newsletter and it’s just great to see so many people taking up further opportunities to learn. None of them happen without members volunteering their own time, thank you to all. If ever you’re looking for information about anything to do with U3A Godley it’s pretty much all on the website including a gallery of photos. A big thank you to Prue Taylor and Trish Holden for putting together such an interesting last series and our new series, End of Year Pot Pourri, is a joint effort from the Programme Committee. I hope many of you can come and also that many will be able to attend our Christmas Luncheon/AGM on Monday 2 December. Meanwhile, enjoy what looks like another very interesting series….

Homebush Station trip
On Friday 18 October a bus load of about 24 members set off for Homebush Station near Darfield for lunch, a good walk around and an exploration through the museum buildings. We all had a good time and Crispin, Fleur, Leo the dog, and Louise (Crispin's mother) were proud to show us around. A long period of ownership by the Deans family means they are deeply involved in maintaining their history on a much smaller scale of about 700 acres from the original 33000 acres acquired in around 1854. From making their own clay bricks used in all their buildings to bridge making using wood harvested from the farm, they endeavour to provide for themselves as much as possible. Thank you to Dick Clayton for organising a lovely peaceful day's outing. Pam Hurst.

Places of Interest visit to Moffatt’s Flower Company
Moffatts moved to its present location in 1982 and covers an area of 2.2 ha which is mostly under glass. The company produces roses and lilies and obtains cut ornamental plants from other suppliers for bouquets. They also cultivate a huge range of indoor potted plants including orchids for the retail market. The glasshouses can withstand a Richter 6 earthquake and are fully supplied with heating from a pellet-burning boiler. LED lighting supplements daylight in the winter months to provide optimum conditions for roses. Much of the watering is from overhead sprinklers apart from drip irrigation + fertilizer for rose bushes grown in bags. Moffatts was taken over by Aroma NZ in 2020, who specialise in health products. Their interest in growing plants involves drying and processing Dahlia flowers which can reduce blood glucose levels and, hence, are an important aid for treating diabetes. Our thanks to Davy and Alister Scott for showing us round the glasshouse complex and giving us so much background information about the cultivation and marketing of flowers. Richard Pickering

Our thoughts go out to those who have lost a loved one recently and there have been a few. Being in the age band that we are, it is unfortunately an ever-expanding list and some of us are facing huge changes to our lives. To those affected, keep smiling, the sun will still come up tomorrow……
